Your smile is one of the most important features you have, and if you’ve ever experienced a broken or chipped tooth, you probably know the panic that sets in when you realize you have to have dental work done. When damage is done to your tooth, whether through decay or trauma, you will face the decision of what procedure is best for you in order to restore your tooth back to its former health. The Santa Monica Bay Dental staff understands the anxiety you may be experiencing, and we’re excited to offer information on a restoration process that we think works great.
What is CEREC?
Short for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, CEREC is a ceramic reconstruction technique that can easily and quickly restore damage done to your teeth. CEREC is a painless, non-invasive option to consider when weighing the options you have for tooth repair.
The CEREC process is simple. The staff here at Santa Monica Bay Dental will use computerized technology to correctly capture an image of your tooth. Once the picture of your tooth is processed, the computer will proceed to create a replacement designed to fit into your fractured tooth precisely. After the computer generated design is complete, we use a machine known as a “milling machine” to carve out the necessary porcelain piece from a larger block. The resulting piece is then placed onto your existing tooth and bonded in place.
As soon as the bonding process is complete, you’ll be good to go! There’s no long, painful recovery process that restricts you from eating or drinking: you’re free to go about your life with a brighter smile than ever before.
We believe that CEREC is one of the best services that we can offer to our patients. The process is less invasive than other types of tooth restoration, and it is absolutely the most conservative and time efficient restorative process currently available.
The advantages of choosing CEREC over other restorative processes are many. Perhaps the most impressive is the fact that the CEREC process generally takes one appointment per tooth, and doesn’t require a follow up visit. We know how valuable your time is, and think that this option offers you the chance to receive a treatment you need without missing days of work and dealing with any sort of uncomfortable recovery process. There is no need to be cautious about temporary crowns, for example, you can eat and drink with confidence right after the appointment!
Another advantage is the ease of the process. A lot of people dread coming to the dentist for restorative work because even the preparation process can be overwhelming. With CEREC, there is no need to worry about creating physical impressions or molds of your teeth: the camera and computer do all the work, and it only takes a few moments to take the picture and have the computer process it.
Finally, the all porcelain CEREC restoration is more esthetic than traditional crowns made of porcelain and metal. The porcelain used is already very similar to tooth enamel, and the bonded piece will match your current tooth – no unsightly fillings or discolored caps to worry about.
