TMJ is short for Temporomandibular Joint which is generally used to discuss disorders or dysfunction. Your temporomandibular joint is what connects your mandible to your skull, frequently known as your jawbone. Pain in this joint can have a domino effect of other pain and problems, we can help. Your dentists at Santa Monica Bay Dental can diagnose what is causing TMJ issues and make the repairs necessary to bring you relief.

How do I know if I have TMJ problems?

The symptoms for TMJ problems may not be noticeably direct. Patients may experience various symptoms and with some indications, patients may never consider telling a dentist because it may not be effecting their mouths. These symptoms may include:

  • headaches
  • earaches
  • pain in your facial structure, cheekbones, neck area
  • pain in your jaw
  • your mouth not opening as wide as before
  • a clicking sound in your jaw
  • popping in your jaw
  • sensitivity in your teeth
  • noticeable shifting in your teeth

How do you treat TMJ?

There are three areas toward treatment. Our first goal is to decrease inflammation or swelling. We can do this with medication and may suggest some relaxation techniques for patients with bruxism. The second area may be to try a night guard for sleeping. We will want to prevent teeth clenching, this may be causing you pain. Night guards is a dental appliance that fits in your mouth and helps prevent clenching. The third area to consider would be restoration. Is there damage to your teeth, or are you missing teeth? Teeth shifting can cause your jaw to come out of alignment, causing pain in your jaw.
